Welcome 1st grade families! Below you will find assignments listed for the week. It is going to be important that we stay in communication with each other. I am depending on you to let me know how your child does with the assigned tasks. I'm mainly concerned about the pacing, how much time is your child having to spend on the assignments, and how much help you are having to provide. Your support is most important when your child is reading - directions, books, or questions asked. When given directions and expectations, these young people are very capable of working independently!
Language arts and math are considered "must do's" which means they are the main focus and must be completed each week. Science and social studies activities are included and are considered "may do's" meaning they aren't required to be completed each week. I want to include plenty of content material, but don't want to overwhelm anyone. Please take a picture of your child's completed language arts and math assignments, and email them to me by Sunday evening each week. This will allow me to gauge how each child is doing with the assigned tasks.
Office hours: I am offering my phone number (703-919-3378) for you to reach out via text if you have a question about an assignment or to check in. I will also be checking my email regularly, and will be setting up appointments via Zoom three times a week. My schedule for Zoom is Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8:30 - 9:00 AM.
May 26 - May 29 (All "must do" assignments that I need to see are in red).
Office hours this week will be Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8:30 - 9:00 AM. Please email, text, or call if you need me to schedule a different time to meet with your child.
Language Arts:
Reading: Read the newspaper "Palm Trees in the Wind" You should read this newspaper at least 3 times. . Read the questions on the back and answer the multiple choice questions. Parents - reading should be done with an adult or older sibling. The answers should be done independently.
Pick a book you can read independently - read the book at least 3 times to an adult or older sibling (practice using expression when you read). Read over the Book Report Bottle Buddy activity. Start planning your bottle buddy based on the main character of your book. Be sure to have your parent check in with me about what book you have chosen. The Bottle Buddy will be due by May 22. Each student will share their book and Bottle Buddy during a Zoom meeting before May 29. Several of you still need to present your Bottle Buddy. Please be ready to do that on Wednesday or Friday morning.
Continue to read - EVERY day. Reading is just like swimming, riding your bike, and playing ball - the more you practice, the better you will be!
Spelling: For the Month of May you will be reviewing and USING your learned spelling rules when you read and write. Keep looking for the "magic e" - it will help you read so many words!
Writing: Write to me about your favorite type of weather. You can write to me about a specific day, what the weather was like, and why you remember that day. You can write about your favorite type of weather and tell me why. Think about it, write about it, check your writing to make sure it is clear to the audience (me).
Your writing must include:
1. At least 8 complete sentences.
2. Be neat and easy for me to read/understand (your ideas are clear and organized).
Review your whole story. Check your COPS. Illustrate your story.
Poetry: Find a poem about summer, the beach, or sand. Read it every day this week.
IXL (Language Arts): Recommendations, 3 different times for 15 minutes.
Math:
Worksheets - Day 18 and Day 19
Place Value Picture - This is due on May 29. Start looking at the directions and "designing" your pictures using place values in 100s, 10s, and 1s. Remember - you can NOT cut apart the 100s blocks or 10s rods. Use the individual 1s if you need less than 10. Be creative! You have a few days left to work on this.
IXL (Math): Recommendations for 15 minutes, 3 times this week.
Optional:
*Work on IXL - do items on your Recommendation page.
*Play Dominos with a sibling or a parent.
*Play 2 Card "War" with a sibling or a parent (flip two cards, add them together, highest sum wins the round).
*Play checkers or Connect 4 with a sibling or a parent.
*Create a picture using only squares (cut out 1 or 2 inch squares in different colors, use those squares to create a picture). Count the squares and label your picture: How many squares did you use in all? How many of each color did you use in all?
*Go outside and find a pattern in nature (or make one) - use rocks, leaves, flowers, sticks (take a picture)
Science:
Keep looking for baby animals and new plants outside! The warm weather and sunshine has made my flower seeds start to grow.
Social Studies:
Find a way to help your mom and dad this week. That might be cleaning your room, emptying the trash cans in the house, feeding the family pets, or playing with a younger sibling so your parents can get their work done.
